| TRADE UNION EDUCATION - VOCATIONAL TRAINING
In times of change in the fields of economy, technology, salaries and labour relations, the need of training becomes imperative for trade union officers.
This big change interferes with our work in trade unions, defines our priorities, affects important factors such as our negotiation skills, our employers’ strategy, employment, working conditions and salaries.
It has been noted at several times that there is a risk of violent development in the employment of the banking sector. This risk is examined either from the quantitative point of view (loss of jobs) or from the qualitative point (discrepancy of the existing knowledge and specialisation in connection with the newly required qualifications). Greek Trade Unions keep realising more and more that vocational education and training are issues of priority.
It has already been understood that training is an active means in labour market policy. In today’s world of strong competition and fast technological, organisational and labour restructuring, the role of training as an intangible investment is decisive for the effective protection of employment.
Developing the appropriate educational projects and policy has been OTOE’s main objective, for several years. Our policy in the field of vocational training is based on the principle that vocational training can and must be the keystone of the so-called ‘many-sided knowledge’ of bank employees.
Vocational training must also be the primary means of information for all tendencies, developments, prospects not only within the Greek banking sector but world-wide as well. In this connection, the Labour Institute of OTOE offers training programmes which are held in Athens and other regions of Greece and are financed by the European Union projects, the National as well as the Employers’ funds. These programmes are for bank employees and they refer to various subjects such as banking system, new banking products, labour relations and management of human resources.
Our aim to organise these programmes is not only in accordance with the regulation and the general strategy of our Institute. It is also a question of priority for us because, in times of rapid change and restructuring of the financial system, vocational training is closely related to employment itself when employment is threatened.
RESEARCH AND STUDIES
We live in a world of rapid change in economic and social field. The financial sector is transformed and reorganised
drastically. There are changes coming in financial services regarding the number of these services as well as the kind of employment required in the banking sector. Trade Unions are obliged to make continuous research and studies in order to approach the problems and the new conditions that are created.
It is well understood that Trade Unions need scientific documentation of their proposals and claims now that new working conditions such as deregulation and flexibility are leading us to a new definition for the nature of labour.
PUBLICATIONS
The publishing activity of OTOE’s Labour Institute comes as a crowning of its many-sided work. The result of this activity is the collection of a rich printed material from important scientific and research projects, as well as from training packages. We thought that it would be useful to publish this material along with every study and research that has a timeless scientific value and interest for trade unions. The wide spreading of knowledge and experience offers new possibilities for banking trade unions and employees in order to find and finally cope with all the factors that form the Greek financial reality.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
The Labour Institute of OTOE is developing this field of activity within the policy of the International Division of OTOE. For the implementation of this policy in educational, training and technical issues we work together with European Training Organisations in order to realise various projects. More specifically, our activity concerns the following :
Co-operation with trade unions of the financial sector from almost all countries of the European Union in developing European Training Projects (such as Leonardo da Vinci, Adapt, Force, Afett etc)
Co-operation with organisations specialised in trade union and vocational training programmes (C.F.P.B. etc). Co-operation through EUROFIET with other Banking Federations in various European projects (Leonardo da Vinci etc)
Co-operation with banking trade unions of countries outside the European Union and especially with countries of the Black Sea and Cyprus. |
